Well the sharp / crisp thing would be my first guess, but you say you have tried that. This may sound like a dumb question, but when you changed the text blending from sharp to crisp or none to strong or what have you, did you make sure the text was selected - like highlighted? If that doesn't work I am afraid I can think of nothing else at the moment...
